Justin Timberlake’s sixth studio album, Everything I Thought It Was (runtime: 76:54), dropped on March 15, 2024, and it’s everything I hoped it would be and more. This is not your typical JT pop album; it’s got a real retro feel, with touches of pop, disco, funk, R&B, and even a bit of Afrobeats woven in. Timberlake teamed up with his longtime collaborator, Timbaland, and Calvin Harris, bringing a fresh yet nostalgic vibe that feels like a sequel to FutureSex/LoveSounds, 18 years later. Let’s just say it’s a huge step up from Man of the Woods.
Starting off strong, Sanctified featuring Tobe Nwigwe is an absolute powerhouse. It’s got this spiritual, rebellious energy, and Timberlake’s vocals paired with Tobe’s verses make it an instant favorite. I’ve had it on repeat since the first listen.
Then there’s Infinity Sex, which feels like a modern-day spin on FutureSex/LoveSounds. It’s hypnotic and sensual, and it’s got that futuristic, smooth groove JT fans will eat up. Meanwhile, F**n’ Up The Disco lives up to its name, taking us straight to the dance floor with a retro beat that just won’t quit.
Technicolor keeps things bright and playful. It’s upbeat, fun, and a refreshing break in the middle of the album. And then there’s Selfish, which takes it down a notch, with Timberlake showing off some truly impressive vocal work. It’s emotional and raw, and honestly, one of the best showcases of his voice on the album.
The thing I love most about Everything I Thought It Was is how it doesn’t stick to one sound. Justin blends genres and pushes boundaries, keeping it exciting while still giving us that signature Timberlake magic. Timbaland’s production is on point (of course), and Calvin Harris adds some extra heat. And while Paradise, the NSYNC reunion track, is gonna be the headline grabber, it didn’t quite crack my top five—though it’s fun and full of nostalgia, the other tracks hit harder for me.
Vocally, Justin’s at his peak, and his voice is just as smooth and versatile as ever. The range, the harmonies—he’s giving us everything. Honestly, my only complaint is that I wish the album was longer. I would happily take more tracks or even a deluxe edition with the songs that didn’t make the cut.
Justin said, “I think there are moments that are incredibly honest on this album,” and that honesty shines through. Everything I Thought It Was is Timberlake at his best, pushing his sound forward while still giving us all the vibes we love. A fantastic listen, start to finish.
